In many countries, there are no products with benzphetamine on the market. The active ingredient belongs to the narcotics. Benzphetamine is available in the USA, for example (e.g. Didrex).
Structure and properties
Benzphetamine (C17H22ClN, Mr = 275.8 g/mol) is present in drugs as benzphetamine hydrochloride, a white crystalline powder that is soluble in water. It is a derivative of amphetamine, which is also biotransformed in the body to amphetamine and methamphetamine.
Effects
Benzphetamine (ATC N06BA) has sympathomimetic, appetite suppressant, and stimulant properties. The effects are due to increased release of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and dopamine in the central nervous system.
Indications
For short-term treatment (few weeks) of overweight and obesity.
Abuse
Like other amphetamines, benzphetamine can be abused as a stimulant intoxicant, such as a party drug and smart drug. Benzphetamine is banned as a doping agent during athletic competitions.

Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include:
- Cardiovascular: Palpable heartbeats, rapid pulse, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, ischemia.
- CNS: stimulation, restlessness, dizziness, sleep disturbances, tremor, sweating, headache, psychotic episodes, depression after discontinuation.
- Digestion: dry mouth, taste disturbances, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion.
- Skin: urticaria, allergic skin reactions.
- Urogenital: libido changes
