Bern Wart Ointment

Products

Bern Wart Ointment is not commercially available as a finished drug product and must be prepared as a magistral prescription or house specialty in a pharmacy.

Ingredients

The ointment contains 2-naphthol, resorcinol, salicylic acid, thymol, and phenol in petrolatum and kerosene. A manufacturing specification can be found in the DMS. Bern wart ointments with an alternative composition are probably also available commercially.

Effects

The active ingredients have keratolytic (skin-dissolving), antimicrobial, and antipruritic properties. They lead to softening and dissolution of the wart.

Indications

For the treatment of warts.

Dosage

The ointment is applied to the wart and covered with a plaster. It must not get on the healthy skin. The surrounding skin can be protected from the corrosive preparation with, for example, petroleum jelly, zinc ointment, nail polish or a plaster. There are different opinions on how long the ointment should remain on the skin. It can be changed daily and the wart can be removed after 2-3 days. A hot bath will facilitate the removal.

Contraindications

The ointment is contraindicated in hypersensitivity, during pregnancy, in infants and young children. It should not be used on the face and genital area and should not come into contact with the skin and mucous membranes. A complete list of precautions is not available.

Interactions

Other wart remedies should not be used at the same time.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local reactions such as redness, irritation, and hypersensitivity reactions.
