Betaisodona

Betaisodona is an antiseptic, i.e. a germicidal agent. It contains iodine as the active ingredient in a chemical compound. The various forms in which Betaisadona is available combat a wide range of pathogens and support wound healing.

What forms of Betaisodona are there?

  • Ointment
  • Solution
  • Wound Gel
  • Spray
  • Oral antiseptic

Betaisodona in the form of ointment can be bought without prescription in the pharmacy. In contrast to the alcohol-based iodine tinctures, which were frequently used in the past, Betaisodona® Ointment does not cause skin irritation or a burning sensation in the affected area. The ointment is often used for cuts or open wounds, although larger injuries should always be clarified with a doctor.

Many smaller wounds that are contracted in everyday life can be treated with Betaisodona, which is why it is an important part of the medicine chest. Larger wounds, however, should always be clarified by a doctor, so that they are treated properly.

  • Betaisodona as a solution is often used for one-time disinfection of the patient’s skin or mucous membranes before surgery.
  • A further field of application is antiseptic wound treatment or even burns, whereby the application should always be limited in time.
  • In hospitals, surgeons also use the Betaisodona solution for surgical hand disinfection.

Betaisodona is also available as a wound gel, whereby it (like the solution or ointment) contains povidone-iodine as the active ingredient and thus has a disinfecting effect.

It is most commonly used for open wounds that could become infected. Examples are burns, abrasions or cuts. The wound gel can help prevent the formation of pus and also supports wound healing.

The wound gel is intended for external use. Betaisodona Spray is also suitable for application on the skin and serves to kill germs and bacteria. Like the other forms of Betaisodona, it has an antiseptic effect and can positively influence the wound healing process.

The oral antiseptic is also available without prescription in pharmacies and contains povidone-iodine as the active ingredient. It is most frequently used shortly before dental procedures, especially in immunocompromised patients or those at increased risk of endocarditis. It is used as a one-time antiseptic treatment of the oral mucosa and should be applied for about 30 seconds and then spat out. For permanent use, Betaisodona can also be used as a mouthwash several times a day, but only on doctor’s orders.
