Bethanechol Chloride

Products

Bethanechol chloride is commercially available in tablet form (Myocholine-Glenwood). It has been approved in many countries since 1977.

Structure and properties

Bethanechol chloride (C7H17ClN2O2, Mr = 196.67 g/mol) is structurally closely related to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Effects

Bethanechol chloride (ATC N07AB02) has parasympathomimetic (cholinergic) properties. It is an agonist at acetylcholine receptors. Bethanechol chloride is relatively selective for urinary bladder and digestive tract smooth muscle. It shows little nicotinic effect and, unlike acetylcholine, has a longer duration of action of about one hour.

Indications

Conditions in which bladder muscle stimulation is indicated: postoperative urinary retention due to bladder atony; neurogenic detrusor weakness.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Dose is adjusted on an individual basis. Tablets are taken approximately 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Contraindications

For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Drug-drug interactions are possible with, for example, anticholinergics, antidepressants, parasympathomimetics, ganglion blockers, and cholinesterase inhibitors.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include increased urination, skin flushing, salivation, sweating, diarrhea, bradycardia, hypotension, and hypothermia.
