Binge Eating Disorder (Bulimia Nervosa): Complications

The following are the major diseases or complications that may be contributed to by bulimia nervosa (binge eating disorder):

Respiratory system (J00-J99)

Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

  • Electrolyte disorders (derailment of blood salts).
    • Hypochloremia (chlorine deficiency)
    • Hypokalemia (potassium deficiency)
    • Hyponatremia (sodium deficiency)
  • Scurvy (vitamin C deficiency)

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Cardiac arrhythmias

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Boerhaave syndrome – spontaneous esophageal perforation (spontaneous rupture of all wall layers of the esophagus); occurs as a result of a sudden and severe intraesophageal pressure increase mainly due to massive vomiting
  • Hypertrophy (enlargement) of the parotid (parotid) and submandibular glands.
  • Gastric rupture – tearing of the stomach wall
  • Esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus)
  • Tooth damage to the point of tooth failure

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

  • Other addictive disorders (alcohol or drug abuse).
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Anorexia nervosa (Anorexia)
  • Depression
  • Impulse control disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Recurrence (recurrence) of bulimia nervosa
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder

Pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium (O00-O99)

  • Hyperemesis gravidarum (extreme morning sickness) – extreme vomiting during pregnancy.

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory parameters not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Hypochloremia (chloride deficiency).
  • Hypokalemia (potassium deficiency)
  • Hyponatremia (sodium deficiency)
  • Suicidality (suicide risk)
  • Underweight

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – sex organs) (N00-N99)

  • Amenorrhea – no menstrual bleeding for more than three months (secondary amenorrhea).
  • Oligomenorrhea (the interval between periods is > 35 days and ≤ 90 days, i.e., periods occur too infrequently)

Causes (external) of morbidity and mortality (V01-Y84).

  • Autoaggressive behavior

  • Social isolation
  • Indebtedness, as a financial consequence of binge eating.

Prognostic factors

  • Frequency of binge eating correlates with frequency of somatic sequelae.
