Birch: Effect and Side Effects

The flavonoids contained in the leaves of birch have a diuretic effect, which has also been experimentally confirmed in animal studies. Flavonoids inhibit a certain enzyme whose activity contributes to urinary retention. Inhibition of this enzyme results in more rapid urination.

This effect is possibly further supported by the relatively high content of ascorbic acid and the essential oil. The increased urinary excretion prevents the formation of kidney and urinary stones. It is further controversial whether the drug also leads to increased salt excretion.
