Drug induction of labor
Induction of labor may be indicated for a variety of reasons, such as premature rupture of the membranes, gestational hypertension, or if the due date has passed. Several medications are available, which are usually administered intravenously, vaginally, or cervically: Oxytocin:
- Is a natural hormone of the pituitary gland that is secreted primarily toward the end of pregnancy. It stimulates the smooth muscles of the uterus.
Dinoprostone:
- Is also a natural substance and corresponds to prostaglandin E2. It causes cervical ripening and rhythmic uterine contractions.
Misoprostol:
- Is a synthetic analog of prostaglandin E1, which also occurs naturally in the body. PGE1 promotes uterine contractions and leads to cervical ripening.
