Bishop’s Weed: Dosage

Phytopharmaceuticals from ammei fruits are practically no longer used today because of the side effects. The drug used to be included, for example, in antispasmodic medicines (spasmolytics) and medicines for the treatment of heart problems (coronary therapeutics) and was offered as a urological remedy.

Dosage of bishop’s weed

As a tea drug, ammei fruits are commercially available, but then with active ingredient standardized to khellin or visnadin. The mean daily dose is 20 mg γ-pyrone (equivalent to about 1 g of the drug).

Bishop’s weed: preparation and storage

Tea preparation is omitted, as there is no corresponding recommendation for bishop’s weed.

Phototoxic furanocoumarins are extracted from fruits of Ammi majus, which are used for phototherapeutic therapy of pigmentary abnormalities and psoriasis. However, the risk of lung and skin cancer is increased.

The fruits should be stored dry and protected from light.
