Black Cohosh: Dosage

Black cohosh can be taken in the form of standardized teas or the dry extract of the plant can also be taken in the form of film-coated tablets or capsules. Furthermore, the tincture is offered in the form of solutions.

Which dose is the right one?

The average daily dose for extracts with ethanol or isopropanol is about 40 mg of the drug.

Black cohosh: own preparation not advisable.

The preparation of its own tea from black cohosh is not recommended, because it does not allow to achieve a quantitatively standardized composition of the ingredients. Therefore, it is recommended to use preparations that have already been discontinued.

Contraindications

Preparations containing black cohosh should not be used in patients who are or have been undergoing treatment for an estrogen-dependent tumor (for example, some breast tumors), as no empirical data are yet available on this subject.

Further notes

Due to the lack of long-term studies yet, the intake of black cohosh preparations should be limited to 6 months.

The drug should be stored in a dry place and protected from light.
