Black Cohosh: Effect and Side Effects

It is controversially discussed whether the contained isoflavones and triterpenes have estrogen-like effect and modulating influence on estrogen receptors, but without having chemically the structure of estrogens. The resulting replacement of the hormone estrogen, which is produced less and less during menopause, could be an explanation for the plant’s beneficial effect on menopausal symptoms.

Other effects of black cohosh

The active ingredients contained in black cohosh also affect certain areas of the hypothalamus located in the brain, causing a decrease in the regular secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH). As a result, the activity of certain nerve cells responsible for regulating temperature and the cardiovascular system is inhibited, leading to the suppression of hot flashes and excessive heart rates.

Black cohosh is further believed to have protective effects on bones as well, according to experimental but not yet clinical studies.

Black cohosh: possible side effects.

In very rare cases, gastrointestinal discomfort, allergic skin reactions, weight gain, tightness in the breasts, and menstrual-like bleeding may occur. There is also controversy as to whether there is a relationship between the use of Cimcifuga preparations and the rare occurrence of liver damage.

Interactions with other agents are not currently known.
