The following symptoms and complaints may occur together with a stuffy nose:
Leading symptoms
- Obstructed nasal breathing/obstruction of nasal breathing (nasal obstruction).
Associated symptoms
- Nasal discharge (rhinorrhea; strong secretion of thin to mucous nasal secretions).
- Pressure in the facial area; cephalgia (headache).
Warning signs (Red flags)
- One-sided nasal congestion with foul-smelling nasal discharge in a young child indicates a foreign body.
- A bloody nasal discharge from one nostril must be thought of a malignant neoplasm (cancer), especially in older people
- Bilateral septal swelling (nasal septum swelling) → think of: Septal hematoma (hematoma of the nasal septum).
