Bone inflammation in the toe

Inflammation in the bone can also occur on one or more toes. A common reason for this is non-healing wounds on the toes (ulcers). These occur particularly frequently in long-term diabetics or circulatory disorders of the legs (pAVK or peripheral arterial occlusive disease).

If the wounds persist for several weeks and are deep and extensive, there is a risk that the infection will spread to the bone. In some cases the wound is so deep that the bone surface is already visible from the outside. Further indications of an inflammation of the toe bones can generally be redness, swelling and pain in the toes.

Mobility in the toe joints may also be restricted. If an inflammation of the toe bones is suspected, the physician makes the diagnosis by clinically assessing the affected toe and inflammation parameters in the blood. X-rays can also provide information about the inflammation and destruction in the bone. In any case, an adequate therapy should be started immediately, which usually consists of the administration of antibiotics. In severe cases, the inflamed tissue must be surgically removed to prevent the inflammation from spreading to the surrounding tissue and adjacent bone.
