The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by bone tumors:
Respiratory system (J00-J99)
- Obstruction of the excretory duct of the paranasal sinus → paranasal sinus mucocele (mucocele = accumulation of mucus) (osteoma).
Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).
- Amyloidosis – extracellular (“outside the cell”) deposits of amyloids (degradation-resistant proteins) that can lead to cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease), neuropathy (peripheral nervous system disease), and hepatomegaly (liver enlargement), among other conditions (plasmacytoma).
- Obesity – due to limited mobility (osteochondroma).
Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).
- When a bone tumor is located near joints or growth plates:
- Osteoarthritis (joint wear).
- Scoliosis (lateral curvature of the body axis).
- Growth disorders
- Bursitis (bursitis) in the affected area (osteochondroma).
- Chronic back pain (tumors of the spine).
- Restriction of movement due to limitation of joint activity (osteochondroma, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma).
- Misalignment and joint malposition, postural deformity (due to the pain → avoidance behavior) (osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma).
- Joint deformities, oblique or short stature (too small body size for age), asymmetric growth in length of arms or legs – due to displacement or destruction of growth plates, caused by the spread of osteochondroma.
Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48).
- Malignant (malignant) degeneration of benign (benign) bone tumors (very rare).
- Metastasis (daughter tumors) of primary malignant (malignant) bone tumors – Ewing’s sarcoma (lung, rest of skeleton, bone marrow, rarely the regional lymph nodes) and osteosarcoma (esp. to lung, but also to bone and liver)
Psyche – Nervous System (F00-F99; G00-G99).
- Depression
- Endocranial complications – caused by an increase in the size of the osteoma, resulting in atrophy (tissue loss) of the dura mater (hard meninges) (osteoma)
- Paresis (paralysis) of varying degrees of non-traumatic genesis (tumors of the spine).
Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).
- Chronic pain
Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – reproductive organs) (N00-N99)
- Renal dysfunction (plasmacytoma/multiple myeloma).
Injury, poisoning, and other sequelae of external causes (S00-T98).
- Pathologic fractures (broken bones) – due to the bone tumor, the affected bone loses strength
