Build an ear candle yourself

Ear candles are made of pure beeswax. However, it is not recommended to produce ear candles yourself, as it must be guaranteed that these candles are drip-free.This is quite difficult to achieve and, in the worst case, can lead to burns in the external auditory canal and its blockage by wax.

Risks when using an ear candle

Treatment with an ear candle carries some risks, which is why ear specialists advise against its use. This is also because a medical effect could not be proven. However, treatment with ear candles can cause injuries to the ear and surrounding areas such as the face.

This can be caused by the dripping wax of the candle if the face is not sufficiently covered. In addition, the external auditory canal can be blocked if wax residues get into it. Burns can also be caused if the candle is not used properly.

During the treatment a strong itching in the auditory canal may occur, which may be perceived as unpleasant. In this case, the treating person should be informed immediately to interrupt or stop the treatment if necessary. Allergic reactions to various ingredients of the ear candle may occur. Even slight skin reactions can occur. However, these should subside shortly after the treatment.

Contraindications to the use of ear candles

If an acute ear infection is present, treatment with an ear candle should never be carried out. The same applies to injuries to the eardrum, for example if it is perforated. A fungal infection of the ear is also a contraindication for treatment.
