Bump on the forehead

Introduction

A bump on the forehead is any visible or palpable bulge on the face between the hairline and the eye area. A bump at this point usually occurs when you have previously bumped your head there. In most cases, the bulge is harmless and disappears by itself after some time without special treatment. Only in very rare cases is a bump on the forehead requiring medical clarification and treatment.

Causes: An overview

The causes for a bump on the forehead are manifold:

  • Blunt injury (for example, fall)
  • Acne
  • Insect bite
  • Allergies
  • Tumor (extremely rare)

Causes in detail

The most common cause of a bump on the forehead is a blunt injury. A fall forward can also lead to a bump on the forehead. Another common cause of bumps on the forehead is skin diseases.

Especially acne, which is widespread among young people, can lead to bulges on the forehead due to blocked and inflamed sebaceous glands. Insect bites can also cause swelling in the forehead area. Especially in the case of an allergic reaction, which can also occur due to food or pollen, large bumps can form on the forehead and the rest of the face.

Malignant diseases are possible anywhere on the body but are extremely rare in the forehead area (with the exception of skin cancer). After a fall with injury to the forehead, a bulge usually develops. In the area of the forehead, the bone of the skull lies just under a thin soft tissue layer of skin and fatty tissue, which is crushed at the injury.

As a result, more tissue water flows in and creates the lump. If a blood vessel is also injured during the fall, a bruise is also produced. This shows as a bruise in the area of the bump.

Over the course of a few days the fluid is reabsorbed by the body and the blood is broken down. The bump on the forehead becomes smaller and smaller and the colour of the bruise changes from green to yellow until it finally disappears. In the case of a bump on the head, which has arisen after a fall, it should always be remembered that the brain can be affected by a concussion.

A doctor should therefore be consulted if symptoms occur. – Headaches,

A bump on the forehead can form due to a blocked or inflamed sebaceous gland. The skin disease acne in particular is widespread among young people between the ages of 15 and 25 and can lead to pathological changes in the sebaceous glands, which are particularly common on the forehead.

In most cases the acne takes a lighter course and only normal pimples form. If bumps occur due to pathological changes in the sebaceous glands on the forehead, treatment by a dermatologist is recommended. Without therapy, large scars often remain when the bumps heal.

A bump on the forehead should not immediately be thought of as a malignant tumour. Even if it is one of the possible causes, it is extremely rare. If a bump on the forehead is the only complaint, in most cases there is a benign cause. Only in the case of conspicuous skin changes, as well as in the case of very hard, poorly movable bumps, should an examination be carried out by a doctor to rule out cancer or at least to detect it in good time.
