Buphenin was included in Arbid drops in combination with diphenylpyralin until late 2011.
Structure and properties
Buphenin (C19H25NO2, Mr = 299.41 g/mol), like other sympathomimetics, has structural similarity to catecholamines, for example, epinephrine.
Effects
Buphenine (ATC C04AA02) is β-sympathomimetic and thus vasodilatory and positively inotropic.
Indications
No longer commercially available in many countries for these indications:
- In combination preparations: rhinitis.
- Peripheral circulatory disorders
- Visaline (off label): age-related macular degeneration, myopia with severe chorioidosis, dark vision disorders.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Fresh heart attack
- Hyperthyroidism
- Tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias
- Severe angina

Use with caution in diabetes mellitus: buphenine may increase blood glucose levels. For full precautions, see the drug label.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include nausea and vomiting, hypotension, palpitations, pectanginal discomfort, cardiac arrhythmias, flushing, headache, weakness, drowsiness, tremor, and nervousness. In high doses: chest pain, visual disturbances, metallic taste.
