Introduction
A burning sensation at the tip of the tongue or the tongue in general is also called glossodynia or glossalgia. The burning pain may be limited to a certain area of the tongue or diffuse over the entire tongue. Miss sensations and disturbances in taste sensation can also be accompanying. Especially in the area of the tip of the tongue, the pain can become very unpleasant, since this area is almost always mechanically irritated when speaking and swallowing.
Causes
The causes of tongue burning at the tip of the tongue can be manifold. On the one hand, pain can occur here as part of general illnesses such as e.g. in the case of painful inflammation of the tongue. However, mechanical stimuli such as pointed/sharp tooth edges, tartar, braces or crowns can also lead to tongue mucous membrane injuries and a painful tip of the tongue.
In addition, allergic reactions to certain foods and general gum inflammation can also affect the tongue and cause painful irritation of the mucous membrane. – Vitamin B deficiency
- Iron Deficiency
- Diabetes mellitus
- Reflux disease
- Viral infections. Especially in the context of a vitamin B12 deficiency a possible tongue burning is known.
Vitamin-B12, as one of the most important vitamins for blood formation, can cause an inflammation of the tongue (Hunter’s Glossitis) when deficient. This is mainly accompanied by burning pain in the area of the tip and edges of the tongue, redness and streaky, spotty changes in the mucous membrane of the tongue, sensory disturbances and taste disorders. In addition to a vitamin B12 deficiency, a lack of vitamin A or vitamin C can also cause glossitis.
The symptoms and changes in the tongue usually disappear completely once the vitamin deficiency has been remedied. A further cause of a burning sensation on the tongue can also be psychological problems or illnesses. Some mental illnesses, such as depression, can manifest themselves in physical symptoms, such as burning of the tongue. However, there is no direct correlation to an altered mucous membrane of the tongue. Even in the case of severe stress or anxiety states, there is occasionally a connection to symptoms such as burning sensations of pain in the area of the tongue.
Therapy
The therapy of a burning tip of the tongue is primarily based on the trigger for these symptoms. Thus, for example, either the treatment of underlying diseases or deficiency symptoms (vitamin/iron deficiency) or the removal of mechanical stimuli (tartar, fillings, etc.) are in the foreground.
Pain-relieving and disinfecting mouth rinsing solutions can be used as an accompaniment, for example with chamomile. On particularly hot and strongly spiced food, as well as nicotine and alcohol, should be avoided during this time in order to avoid additional irritation of the mucous membranes. The homeopathic therapy experiment essentially comprises two remedies: firstly Marum verum (cat gamander). On the other hand Mezereum Seidelblast, also used for inflammations of the skin and mucous membranes, blistering and burning of the tongue.
