Burning Mouth Syndrome: Therapy

Causal therapy depends on the cause.

General measures

  • Nicotine restriction (refraining from tobacco use).
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

Local therapy with:

  • Chamomile
  • Myrrh
  • Sage

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • If inflammation is the cause of burning mouth syndrome, the following recommendations apply:
      • Avoiding hot spices such as pepper, curry and paprika, as well as highly salted foods.
      • Avoiding acidic foods such as vinegar, fruit (citrus, kiwi, sour apples), rhubarb, sauerkraut or sour cucumbers and tomatoes. Currant juice irritates the mouth.
      • Creamy soups, porridge, mashed potatoes, pasta, vegetable puree, applesauce, pudding are suitable. Avoid dry or crumbly.
      • Do not consume food too hot.
      • Drink liquid with meals, such as still mineral water or herbal teas (chamomile and flax tea).
      • Avoid carbonated drinks, acidic fruit juices and alcohol.
      • Brush teeth thoroughly after each meal and rinse toothpaste thoroughly.

      In addition, between meals, the mouth should be rinsed more often with an anti-inflammatory solution. The ingredients for an anti-inflammatory solution can be obtained at any pharmacy:

      • Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3): 300 mg.
      • A-Mulsin forte: 10 drops
      • Physiological saline solution: 100 ml
    • Diet rich in:
      • If vitamin B12 deficiency is present: Vitamin B12
      • If there is an iron deficiency: trace element iron
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
