Burns: Diagnostic Tests

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Arterial pulse contour analysis – method for monitoring hemodynamics in patients requiring intensive care.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG; recording of the electrical activities of the myocardium)Note: If there is a history of unconsciousness or initial abnormal ECG findings, ECG should be derived again after 24 h.
  • Echocardiography (echo; cardiac ultrasound) – if structural heart disease is suspected.
  • Invasive blood pressure measurement
  • Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs) – for basic diagnostics.
  • X-ray of the thorax (X-ray thorax / chest), in two planes.
  • Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen (abdominal CT) – for further diagnosis.
  • Bronchoscopy (pulmonary endoscopy) – for suspected inhalation trauma.
  • X-rays – if fractures (broken bones) are suspected.
  • Biopsy (tissue sampling) from the burned skin areas – to determine the depth of the burn.
