Butenafine

Butenafine is not commercially available in many countries. In other countries, it is available as a cream (e.g., Mentax) and other products.

Structure and properties

Butenafine (C23H27N, Mr = 317.5 g/mol) is present in drugs as butenafine hydrochloride, a white crystalline powder that is sparingly soluble in water. It is a naphthalene derivative and benzylamine with a similar structure to the allylamines.

Effects

Butenafine (ATC D01AE23) has antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It is effective against dermatophytes, Candida, dimorphic, and molds, among others. The effects are based on inhibition of the synthesis of ergosterol and disruption of the formation of the cell membrane.

Indications

For the treatment of fungal skin infections, e.g., athlete’s foot and pityriasis versicolor.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The cream is applied once daily.

Contraindications

Butenafine is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

There are no known drug-drug interactions to date.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions such as a stinging, burning, redness, and itching.
