Butylated hydroxytoluene is found in pharmaceuticals as an excipient, mainly in semisolid and liquid medicines, but also in some tablets, soft capsules, and medicated chewing gum, for example.
Structure and properties
Butylhydroxytoluene (C15H24O, Mr = 220.4 g/mol) exists as a white to yellowish white crystalline powder and is practically insoluble in water due to its lipophilic properties. It is a -butyl derivative of -cresol and a phenol. Butylhydroxytoluene is odorless or has a slight aromatic odor.
Effects
Butylhydroxytoluene has antioxidant properties. It protects active ingredients and excipients from undesirable oxidation.
