Caffeine Withdrawal Headache

Symptoms

Caffeine withdrawal headache is a secondary headache that develops within 24 hours of the last caffeine consumption. It is preceded by caffeine consumption of ≥200 mg/day for ≥2 weeks, ie, 2-3 cups of coffee daily.

Treatment

Headache improves within 1 hour after ingestion of 100 mg of caffeine; this is equivalent to approximately 1 cup of coffee, an energy drink, or 2 cups of black tea. It disappears within 7 days after complete caffeine withdrawal.
