Calculate body fat percentage

There are a number of formulas to calculate overweight, underweight or body fat percentage. One well-known index is the so-called BMI, also known as the Body Mass Index. It is calculated by dividing the body weight in kilograms by the height in meters squared.

A range between 18.5 and 25 kg/m2 is defined as normal weight. A man who is 1.80 meters tall and weighs 75 kilograms has a BMI of 23.15 kg/m2 and is therefore of normal weight. However, the body mass index is very controversial.

A high body weight and thus also a high body mass index can be caused not only by a high body fat percentage, but also by a muscular physique such as that of competitive athletes. A further index is for example the so-called Body-Adiposity-Index (BAI), with which the body fat portion can be determined. Here the body fat percentage is calculated on the basis of the body length and the hip circumference.

In addition, there is the so-called Waist-to-Hip-Ratio, with which the ratio between waist and hip circumference can be calculated. This index primarily describes the location of the fat deposits and therefore provides an important indication of the risk of cardiovascular disease.
