The following symptoms and complaints may indicate calf pain:
- Cramp-like calf pain that occurs mainly at night.
Accompanying symptoms
- Calf swelling
- Overheating of the calf
- Walking disorders such as limping (claudication)
Warning signs (red flags)
- Claudication intermittens (intermittent claudication) + nocturnal bunion pain → think: critical ischemia (reduced blood flow) due to peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD).
- Calf swelling think of: → deep vein thrombosis (TBVT) [ischemia/lack of blood flow: arterial thrombosis: pain, localized peripheral cyanosis Bluish discoloration of the skin); venous thrombosis: Hyperthermia, swelling, mild bluish discoloration, pain in the area of the affected veins]
- Calf pain + general feeling of illness→ prompt clarification required.
