Calluses and Blisters on the Feet: Causes, Treatment & Help

Calluses and blisters on the feet, as well as lack of exercise, are an evil of our time. Walks, hikes and sports are a useful counterbalance. For this, however, you need a healthy foot. However, our way of life also softens the feet at the same time. This guide gives them valuable tips and tricks on how to get rid of calluses and blisters on the feet.

Causes of calluses and blisters

Against continuous friction in the sole of the foot, the body protects itself, if necessary, during greater stress by the formation of a protective layer, the so-called callus. In many cases, this can only be removed by professional foot care. Due to unaccustomed stress and changes in the normal structure of the feet, blisters and calluses can be so painful that they make walking a nuisance for many people. How do blisters and calluses develop? When pressure and rubbing of the shoes at predestined places cause the epidermis to be continuously and unusually displaced against the usually harder base at the heels, toe joints or soles of the feet, this results in a local irritation, the formation of a blister. It is unpleasant and painful. The pain is intensified if the blister is chafed in the further course, in which case we have to deal with an open wound surface, which can quickly become a source of infection. The body protects itself against continuous friction in the area of the sole of the foot, if necessary in the case of greater stress, by the formation of a protective layer, the so-called callus. In a dosed manner, it can give the foot a welcome protection against continuous stress. In many cases, however, this formation of callus of the uppermost skin layer proceeds to such an extent that these callus armors become painfully pressing foreign bodies. Treatment of cornea and blisters

Blisters

  • Check footwear. Feet and shoes must be supple, soft and dry. Have hard shoe caps soft-knocked, if possible wear shoes without quilted parts in the toe area.
  • The places where blisters tend to occur should be rubbed with wet soap over the stocking or
  • Stick the designated places with a sticking plaster (not wound plaster with gauze pad) such as Leukoplast waterproof or simply scotch tape, which fixes the epidermis and the abrasive action runs over the plaster.
  • By foot care and hardening. Especially by eliminating foot sweat, a lot of barefoot walking, cold short foot baths and rubbing with rubbing alcohol and self-massage of the feet with skin function oil.
  • Smaller blisters provide a protective plaster and let them dry up. Larger ones, on the other hand, should be cut open with sterile pointed scissors; collect the wound secretion with absorbent cotton, leave the skin on as a protection and over it plaster. Do not cut the skin and never try to tear off the skin with your fingers, even in the case of open scrubbed blisters.
  • Open scrubbed blisters are cleaned in a foot bath if they are dirty. Here you cut away the scraps of skin, provide the wound surface with wound protection products, of which there are many effective. The conclusion is a wound protection dressing.

Callus

  • Possibly eliminate bumps in the shoe.
  • After hot foot bath with pumice stone, sharkskin or callus scraper carefully remove the callus. Never take away too much, leave a thin protective layer.
  • On the gauze layer of a wound plaster (eg Hansaplast) of 4-6 cm wide, apply a little soft soap and stick to the thick corneal areas. Leave on it for a few hours. Then take a hot foot bath, whereupon the softened callus can be easily removed. After that, grease these places regularly.
  • Before big hikes or sports activities, especially when playing sports indoors or on hard places, you should put on prepared socks that prevent both calluses – and blisters. To do this, you do the following:

If possible, take wool socks or cotton socks, dip them in cold water and squeeze, turn inside out.

  • Now apply a bar of soap to the areas of the sock where calluses and blisters tend to appear. Allow socks to dry and turn back to right. Now the prepared socks or stockings are ready for use and the best protection against the formation of calluses and blisters.
