Can alcohol help you lose weight?
The question of whether alcohol can help you lose weight is clearly to be answered in the negative. Alcohol has a high glycaemic index. This means that alcohol consumption rapidly increases the blood sugar level, but just as quickly it drops again.
This promotes an unfavourable metabolic situation and ultimately leads to weight gain. Apart from this, alcohol consumption is detrimental to general health and often leads to healthy eating being neglected. Serious alcoholics are very often very thin, but this is due to malnutrition in the context of a severe alcohol dependency. Such alcohol dependence is a serious physical and mental illness and is by no means a desirable condition, let alone a way of losing weight.
Is the only way to lose weight by giving up alcohol?
Alcohol abstinence is recommended in almost every concept for weight reduction. But is it possible to lose weight just by giving up alcohol? Assuming that you maintain your other diet and abstain from alcohol completely, this can already have positive effects on your weight.
Many additional calories are lost by abstaining from alcohol. Especially if you drink alcohol regularly, this can already lead to weight reduction. However, the pure renunciation of alcohol is not sufficient for very overweight people to bring about sufficient weight reduction. Even if you only consume very little, for example a glass of wine a month, giving up alcohol is unlikely to have much effect on weight. Nevertheless, alcohol abstinence should be supported as it has a generally positive effect on health and physical constitution.
What about non-alcoholic beer?
Non-alcoholic beer has become increasingly popular, especially in recent years. The taste of non-alcoholic beer has improved over the years, so that consumption has increased significantly throughout the population. Not only does non-alcoholic beer perform better than conventional beer in terms of alcohol content, but also in terms of calorie content.
It contains about half as many calories as regular beer, so it is also preferable when on a diet or losing weight. Of course, non-alcoholic beer still contains carbohydrates and calories that could easily be avoided, so it is often recommended to drink only water and unsweetened tea when trying to lose weight. However, if you don’t want to give up your beer, you should rather go for a non-alcoholic beer.
Medical assessment on weight loss and alcohol – How does this fit together?
When it comes to losing weight, regular exercise, a healthy and low-calorie diet and discipline are usually required. In the context of this, one can only recommend to abstain from alcohol. Alcohol has a negative effect on the sugar metabolism, promotes weight gain and favours the frequently feared ravenous hunger pangs.
You should therefore avoid alcohol if you really want to lose weight. Furthermore, regular consumption of alcohol can cause serious damage to health, which only makes a healthy lifestyle even more difficult. At this point we can only advise you to avoid alcohol. If you do not want to give up alcohol consumption at all, you should prefer low-calorie types of alcohol.
