Can I bathe my child?

In principle, it is possible to bathe a toddler with fever. However, if the child does not want to bathe under any circumstances, it is also possible to avoid bathing. There are some important things to consider.

First, the child should never be left unattended. In the worst case, a febrile spasm could occur, in which the child slips under water. Accordingly, the water should not be let too deep into the tub.

The water should be lukewarm, too warm water can aggravate a fever and if the water is too cold, children with fever can cool down very quickly. If a bath salt, medicinal bath or similar is used, it is important to make sure that it is approved for children. Overall, rather small quantities should be used.

However, there are some good products that pharmacies and pediatricians can advise on. The bath should not last longer than ten minutes and care must be taken to ensure that the child is then well dried and wrapped up warm (for example in bed) to prevent hypothermia.
