Can I drive it? | Back orthosis

Can I drive it?

There is no ban in principle on driving with a back orthosis. Who is allowed to drive a car with a back orthosis and who is not is to be decided individually by a treating physician or physiotherapist. In most cases, the question of driving a car does not depend on whether an orthosis is worn or not.

Rather, the question is how severe the functional limitation of the affected person is due to the disease. Anyone who can eliminate all restrictions with his or her orthosis is of course allowed to drive a car. On the other hand, people who are unable to move freely should prefer not to sit behind the wheel.

Should I also wear an orthosis at night?

Whether a back orthosis should also be worn at night depends strongly on the indication. Corrective orthoses must usually be worn 23 to 24 hours a day, otherwise they cannot sufficiently influence the malposition to be treated. Stabilizing orthoses prescribed after spinal surgery should initially be worn at night. Later, the wearing time is usually reduced until the orthosis only needs to be worn during physical activity.
