Can psychogenic respiratory distress be cured in the long term?

A permanent cure for the psychologically caused shortness of breath using medication is usually not possible. Instead, psychotherapy can help by consciously treating the cause of the shortness of breath, thus “defusing” situations that may have triggered the shortness of breath and making them harmless to the person concerned. In most cases, medication only helps in the acute situation of shortness of breath, but does not solve the underlying problem. On the other hand, psychotherapeutic therapy can permanently relieve or possibly even cure the shortness of breath.
