Can the gastric bypass be reversed?

At first, it is recommended to eat small portions because of the very small stomach volume. Once the diet has been restored after the surgery, a balanced mixed diet is the program. However, a few things must be taken into account.

For example, no alcohol should be drunk and no foods with high sugar content should be eaten. It is also important to ensure a sufficient supply of vitamins and eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. Protein-containing foods must also be considered in the diet, as there is a risk of protein deficiency.

Otherwise, it is generally recommended to ensure an adequate intake of fluids and, if possible, not to drink during meals. Unfortunately, it can also turn out individually that some foods are not tolerated after the operation. However, this can improve over time.

The smaller stomach means that alcohol is absorbed much faster and higher per mille values are reached earlier. For this reason, it is advisable to abstain from alcohol consumption during a gastric bypass or to consume only very small amounts. Too much alcohol consumption can also quickly have a bad effect on the liver. In many cases the hormones in the pill are no longer absorbed sufficiently and unplanned pregnancies may occur, but this should be avoided in the initial phase after the operation. It is therefore important not to rely on the pill as a contraceptive but to look for alternative methods of contraception.

Can I still get pregnant after a gastric bypass?

After a gastric bypass it is possible to become pregnant. It is even possible that fertility is increased due to the reduction of body fat. Some doctors believe that it is better to become pregnant after rather than before gastric bypass surgery, as the risk of gestational diabetes, for example, is lower.

However, pregnancy should be waited until after the operation until everything has healed and you can cope with the new situation. It is strongly recommended to wait 12-18 months before becoming pregnant. This is the period during which the greatest weight loss takes place.

Since the operation is usually performed laparoscopically, i.e. minimally invasive by laparoscopy, the scars are very small. Normally there are five to six scars with a length of about one to five centimeters. In some cases the operation must be performed openly. This is a single very long scar, which can also be twenty centimeters long.
