Causes in pregnancy

Hiccups can also occur during pregnancy. This can affect both the unborn baby and the expectant mother. In the womb, the baby drinks amniotic fluid daily.

This can lead to the occurrence of hiccups. Another theory is that hiccups in the mother’s abdomen during pregnancy are a kind of lung training because the baby cannot breathe in the womb. Hiccups can also occur in the mother-to-be.

One reason for this can be the increasing lack of space within the pregnancy. As the baby and the uterus grow, the other organs are displaced during pregnancy. Especially towards the end of a pregnancy the stomach also becomes narrow. If a larger meal then causes the stomach to expand more, this can also be a cause of hiccups, as the diaphragm becomes irritated more quickly due to the expansion of the stomach and the lack of space.
