Almost all vaccinations recommended during the first year of life can also cause gastrointestinal complaints as a side effect. This can be related to the ingredients of the vaccine, but also to the fact that the respective vaccination boosts the body’s own immune system. In the short term, this can lead to various – in most cases completely harmless – symptoms, such as diarrhoea.
Diagnosis of diarrhea by vaccination in the baby
If diarrhoea occurs hours to a few days after a successful vaccination, this can be an indication of a connection between vaccination and diarrhoea. In infants, however, diarrhea occasionally occurs – especially when they are fed with supplementary food or when they change milk – even independently of vaccinations. Gastrointestinal infections such as rotavirus or norovirus infections can also lead to diarrhoea in babies. If the symptoms subside within 1-3 days and the baby drinks enough, a more detailed diagnosis is usually not necessary. If diarrhoea persists, it may be useful to take a stool sample so that it can be examined for pathogens.

After a rotavirus vaccination, diarrhoea can occur. The duration of the diarrhoea varies from child to child. Usually it does not last longer than 1-2 days and disappears by itself. It is important to ensure a sufficient fluid intake.

If diarrhoea occurs after a rotavirus vaccination, this is usually a harmless side effect of the vaccination. In this case, the diarrhea is not contagious, as it does not contain any infectious pathogens. However, if a rotavirus infection does occur, rotaviruses are found in the stool and there is a relatively high risk of infection.
