Causes of lumbago

Causes

It is interesting for patients with lumbago that a large part of them assume that a herniated disc must be the cause of their complaints. It is probably true that the herniated disc is considered the worst and most painful cause of sudden back pain and is accordingly expected when such an event occurs. In fact, a herniated disc is only very rarely responsible for a sudden back pain/hex shot.

Rather, leg pain, which is caused by the pressure of the herniated disc on the spinal cord nerve root, is the main cause.

  • Spinal Canal
  • Spinal cord nerve fibers
  • Position of the rear longitudinal band
  • Disc protrusion
  • Lumbar vertebral body

The cause of lumbago can be different. There are different theories about what changes in the spine can cause such a sudden and painful clinical picture:

  • Segmental articular dysfunction (“blockage”) of a vertebral joint
  • Capsule strain of a vertebral joint
  • Lumbar disc protrusion
  • Herniated disc of the lumbar spine
  • Muscle Strain
  • In the case of a blockage as the cause of lumbago, one imagines that an unfavorable body movement has caused a small vertebral joint to become entangled during the movement, thereby eliminating the natural play of the joint. Depending on the position in which this entanglement persists, the joint can either no longer be opened or closed properly during movement. Due to the “wrong” joint position, the joint capsule of the vertebral joint, which is interspersed with many pain-conducting nerve fibers, is under tension, causing the sudden pain.

Blocking

Often, however, the cause of a sudden lumbago remains unclear, because the disease has a benign character and the complaints decrease quite quickly under symptomatic (pain-oriented) therapy. If the pain shows no improvement, further examinations must follow to investigate the cause in more detail.
