Causes of stroke in babies

Approximately 300 children and young people are diagnosed with a stroke in Germany every year. While many of the causes of these rare strokes have not yet been sufficiently clarified, hereditary coagulation disorders in particular can now be identified as the main cause. The symptoms of a stroke at a young age can differ significantly from those of adults. Some symptoms, such as a speech disorder or walking weakness, sometimes only become noticeable after months, which can make the diagnosis much more difficult.

Nevertheless, children have a very good prognosis in comparison to adults because brain growth is not yet complete and the function of the lost nerve cells can often be compensated. Thus, 90% of children can lead a normal life after a stroke and are not dependent on outside help. Nevertheless, about every tenth child must continue to live with major neurological functional limitations.
