Cefamandol

Products

Cefamandol is commercially available as an injectable (Mandokef). It has been approved in many countries since 1978.

Structure and properties

Cefamandol (C18H18N6O5S2, Mr = 462.5 g/mol) is present in drugs as cefamandolafate, a white powder that is readily soluble in water.

Effects

Cefamandol (ATC J01DA07) has bactericidal properties. The effects are due to inhibition of cell wall synthesis.

Indications

For treatment of bacterial infectious diseases with susceptible pathogens.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The drug is administered parenterally (intravenously or intramuscularly).

Contraindications

Cefamandol is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

Alcohol should not be consumed during treatment because an intolerance reaction may result. Other drug-drug interactions have been described with antithrombotics, probenecid, other antibiotics, and nephrotoxic agents.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include hypersensitivity reactions, nausea, vomiting, hepatic dysfunction, blood clotting disorders, dizziness, headache, and administration site reactions.
