Structure and properties
Cefixime (C16H15N5O7S2, Mr = 453.4 g/mol) is a white powder that is sparingly soluble in water. It is a semisynthetic cephalosporin. In medicinal products, it is anhydrous.
Effects
Cefixime (ATC J01DD08) is bactericidal against Gram-positive and -negative pathogens by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Indications
Cefixime is approved for the treatment of respiratory tract infections, ENT infections, acute and chronic urinary tract infections, and acute uncomplicated gonorrhea.
Dosage
According to the drug label. Cefixime may be taken independently of meals.
Contraindications

Interactions
Interactions have been described with the following agents: Antibiotics, aminoglycosides, polymyxin B, colistin, and loop diuretics.
Adverse effects
The most common adverse effects include headache, dizziness, restlessness, and indigestion. Like other cephalosporins, it can cause hypersensitivity reactions. Other, less common adverse effects are possible.
