Celiac Disease: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of celiac disease (gluten-induced enteropathy).

Family history

  • Are there any diseases of the gastrointestinal tract in your family that are common?
  • Are there any hereditary diseases in your family?

Social anamnesis

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Do you suffer from a bloated abdomen?
  • Do you have abdominal pain? If so, how are they related to food intake?
  • Are your stools greasy and shiny?
  • Do you have diarrhea? If so, what does the diarrhea look like (watery or grayish-shiny) and how many times a day do you have to go to the bathroom?
  • Do you suffer from nausea?
  • Do you feel listless and tired?
  • Do you suffer from concentration problems?
  • Do you suffer from depression?
  • Does your child have failure to thrive? (Question for parents)

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you have a loss of appetite?
  • Have you lost weight unintentionally?
  • Do you eat a balanced diet?

Self history incl. medication history

  • Pre-existing conditions (gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes mellitus type 2).
