Chewing gum can be chewed without hesitation during pregnancy. Expectant mothers often shy away from chewing gum because it contains “polyvalent alcohols”. This term confusingly describes only as an umbrella term the contained sweeteners and has nothing to do with the stimulant alcohol.

Menthol-containing varieties are also harmless to mothers and the unborn child.Chewing gum can help with increased nausea and heartburn, relieve symptoms and calm a stressed maternal organism. Therefore, chewing gum during pregnancy can have positive effects that can reduce the unpleasant pregnancy symptoms. Furthermore, accidental swallowing of chewing gum is not considered a cause for concern, as it is excreted undigested. Nevertheless, excessive consumption of chewing gum should not be consciously swallowed.

The use of chewing gum leads to a considerable increase in saliva through the stimulation of the salivary glands. This promotes the incorporation of minerals into the tooth enamel and neutralizes and dilutes harmful acids. Chewing gum is not a substitute for the toothbrush.

Chewing gum should not contain sugar. Side effects are not to be feared. It is best disposed of by wrapping it in paper.
