Child’s tooth broken off

Children like to romp around outside, play with other children and are not yet able to assess possible dangers very well, which is why accidents often occur in which the teeth are affected. In most cases the front incisors are affected. In each situation, the affected persons should remain calm and search for the lost tooth, which can then be stored in a glass of milk or a special tooth box until the next visit to the dentist shortly afterwards.

If the tooth cannot be found immediately, the oral cavity should be searched for it in order to prevent it from being swallowed or slipped into the windpipe. The found tooth should also not be disinfected or tried to be cleaned clean so as not to damage the fine structures. If it bleeds heavily, you can bite on a cloth and cool it from the outside.

The faster the tooth can be re-inserted by the dentist (replantation), the higher is the probability that it will grow again. Outside of a tooth rescue box the tooth has a chance of survival of about 30 minutes. The cement-forming cementoblasts must survive to enable successful insertion.

If a tooth is not re-inserted and a gap is created, the neighboring teeth will start to migrate and tilt to close the gap. This can lead to changes in the masticatory system with long-lasting consequences. If the teeth are fully-grown and permanent, a suitable dental prosthesis will then be made and inserted.

If the knocked-out tooth is still a milk tooth, it will not be reimplanted and the resulting gap will be treated provisionally, for example with an acrylic tooth, until the development of the remaining teeth is completed and a definitive denture can be inserted. As an alternative, there are fixed or removable placeholders such as braces to which a tooth is fixed. In this way the surrounding teeth do not tilt into this gap and the space is preserved for the regrowing permanent tooth, so that there are no problems in the dentition later on. Besides chewing, this also ensures the development of correct speech formation.
