Chronic sinusitis

If a chronic sinusitis is present, the treating physician should always be consulted to clarify the cause. Nasal rinses and inhalations with salt water are also used here to dissolve the mucus within the sinuses. Often the doctor prescribes locally effective cortisone preparations that are directed against the inflammation. In some cases, sinusitis can also be provoked by an allergy, in which case desensitization can be considered. In most cases, chronic sinusitis must be treated surgically, since certain anatomical conditions favour the development of sinusitis, such as a crooked nasal septum, narrowed sinus ducts or nasal polyps that must be removed.
