Citronella oil is commercially available in the form of sprays, bracelets, fragrance lamps and as pure essential oil, among other products.

Structure and properties

Citronella oil is the essential oil obtained by steam distillation from the fresh or partially dried aerial parts of (PhEur). It exists as a pale yellow to brownish yellow liquid with a very strong odor of citronellal. The main constituents include citronellal, geraniol and citronellol. This oil is also known as Java citronella oil. Ceylon citronella oil is derived from .

Effects

Citronella oil has insect repellent properties against mosquitoes, lice and some flies. The duration of action is 1.5 to 5 hours depending on the insect and is shorter than DEET. Depending on the formulation, it may be prolonged.

As a repellent to prevent insect bites and mosquito bites.
