Classification | ExercisesPhysiotherapy for an elbow luxation

Classification

In case of an existing elbow dislocation, doctors will classify the injury. This depends on the direction in which the dislocation is present. This results in the following classifications: posterior (back) posterolateral (ulna and radius next to the humerus) posteromedial (ulna and radius centered on the humerus) anterior (front) divergent (ulna and radius both sides of the humerus).

  • Posterior (back)
  • Posterolateral (ulna and radius next to the humerus)
  • Posteromedial (ulna and radius centered on the humerus)
  • Anterior (front side)
  • Diverging (ulna and radius on both sides of the humerus)

OP

If the dislocation of the elbow is very complex, many structures are damaged or open injuries are present, surgery is necessary. If possible, the operation is performed using a minimally invasive or open procedure. The operating surgeon will bring the displaced bones back into the correct position, remove or suture destroyed structures and repair further desecration as best he can.

In cases of complicated fractures and major instabilities, the use of surgical plates and nails may be necessary, which are then removed after several months. During the operation, the correct position of the joint can be checked by means of x-rays. After the operation, the arm is immobilized with a plaster cast. The physiotherapeutic treatment should be started on the same day of the operation to minimize swelling, pain and movement restrictions.

How long is the cast worn?

In case of an elbow dislocation, the joint should be returned to its original position within the first 6 hours after the injury, if possible. Depending on the extent of the injury, this is done surgically or conservatively. Afterwards it is important to immobilize the elbow joint to allow the injury to heal.

In many cases this is done by applying a plaster cast. This must be worn for the next 1-2 weeks. If there is an additional instability of the elbow due to the severity of the injury, the duration may be increased to 3-4 weeks.
