Cleaning tablets

The cleaning tablets offer a cleaning option that is easy to handle. The ingredients of these tablets are mainly surfactants, i.e. soaps, they lower the surface tension of the water, whereby the coatings are lifted from the prosthesis and kept in the solution. The effect of the surfactants is achieved by polyphosphates, which soften the water.

The germicidal ingredients play an important role, since every prosthesis is colonized by a wide variety of germs in the oral cavity. The killing of the germs is done by active oxygen, which is released from sodium peroxoborate. As a rule, the solutions are alkaline, but there are also tablets in which organic acids such as citric acid or tartaric acid produce an acidic solution, which can also reduce tartar – the effect is limited, however.

The effervescent effect supports the chemical action by mechanically detaching the soft components. Before using the cleaning tablets, the food residues should be removed with a soft brush. Cleaning powders are less common.

A distinction is made between quick-cleaning tablets, for which a lying time of 10 to 20 minutes is sufficient, and tablets with long-term effect, for which the prosthesis should lie in the solution for 6 to 8 hours, preferably overnight. After removal, the prostheses should be rinsed under clear water before they can be put back in place. From a dental point of view, denture cleaners should meet the following criteria: However, the use of cleaning tablets cannot prevent a colonization of the denture with a fungus called Candida albicans.

Such an infestation shows itself in a deep red inflammation of the mucous membrane, which is sharply limited to the extension of the prosthesis. In case of complaints or suspicion of the fungal infection, it is absolutely necessary to visit the dentist. In order to fight this infection, the denture must also be placed in a solution of chlorhexidine. At the same time, the mouth rinse with chlorhexidine is also necessary to prevent reinfection.
