An inflammation of the nasal mucosa, medically known as rhinitis or better known as a cold, results in an acute or permanent inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Triggers can be pathogens (often viruses), allergies (e.g. pollen, house dust mites, animal hair), tissue loss of the nasal mucosa due to malformations or tumors, or even the ingestion of nasal sprays themselves. With regard to nasal sprays, a permanent intake over several weeks leads to a local dependence of the nasal mucosa on the decongestant medication.

The consequence: without the nasal spray, the nasal mucosa is no longer able to let its mucosa swell down and thus gives the feeling of a blocked and swollen nose. Therefore, it is recommended to take nasal sprays in combination with seawater. The symptoms of an inflammation of the nasal mucous membrane are sneezing, itching, runny nose, the feeling of a blocked nose, obstruction of nasal breathing or burning pain.

The therapy depends on the triggering disease and the symptoms. By taking decongestant nasal drops and inhaling salt water vapour, the respiratory tract is kept clear. If the nasal mucosa inflammation is based on an allergy, it is treated with antihistamines or cortisone.

In the case of severe bacterial infections, it may be necessary to take an antibiotic. In the case of malformations in the area of the nose, a surgical intervention with surgical correction is recommended. The dry nose is the opposite of a runny, runny nose.

In this case, the wet nasal mucous membranes dry out.The causes can be dry room air as well as overheated or air-conditioned rooms, high dust exposure or a beginning cold. Those affected complain of itching, a feeling of dryness in the nose, burning, crust formation, nosebleeds or a decrease in the ability to smell. A permanently dry nose can cause the nasal mucous membrane to lose its protective function, thus creating a breeding ground for pathogens.

If the dry nose persists for several days, consult a doctor. The therapy initially consists of eliminating the triggering cause. Dry rooms should be equipped with humidifiers such as water-filled bowls on heaters.

Nasal sprays with sea water or nasal showers with salt water can also keep the nasal mucous membrane moist. In addition, caring products such as nasal ointments can counteract a dry nose.
