As one of the most common joints in the human body, the AC joint is affected by arthrosis, i.e. a sign of wear and tear. This can be explained above all by the fact that it is constantly subjected to strong mechanical stress, which the narrow disc separating the two joint surfaces often cannot withstand for life. The shoulder corner joint is also frequently blown up.

Mostly after a fall, typically in a bicycle fall with falling over the handlebars. This causes one or more of the ligaments involved in the joint formation to tear. Depending on which ligaments are injured and to what extent, there is a subdivision of the AC-joint rupture in degrees I-III according to Tossy.

Typical for such an injury is an elevation of the external clavicle. The most pronounced variant is called “piano key phenomenon”, because here the outer end of the clavicle can be pressed down like a piano key.
