Products

Cold balms are available in many countries from various suppliers. Examples of products include Pulmex, Vicks VapoRub, Liberol, Resorban, Wala Plantago Bronchial Balm, Phytopharma Thyme Ointment, Angelica Balms, and Weleda Cold Ointment.

Ingredients

The composition depends on the product. Cold balms usually contain essential oils. Possible ingredients include, for example (selection):

  • Angelica oil
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Spruce needle oil
  • Camphor
  • Pine needle oil
  • Levomenthol
  • Peru balsam
  • Rosemary oil
  • Ribwort
  • Turpentine oil
  • Thymol
  • Thyme oil

Usually lipophilic ointment bases are used, for example, petrolatum, beeswax or wool grease.

Effects

Cold balms have warming, decongestant, antiseptic, expectorant and expectorant properties. They facilitate breathing during colds.

Indications

For symptomatic treatment of respiratory diseases such as colds, rhinitis, sore throat, hoarseness, and cough.

Dosage

According to the package leaflet. The ointments are usually rubbed gently about three times a day on the chest, throat and back. Cover with a cloth if necessary. The last application is made before going to bed. Some remedies can be inhaled dissolved in hot water.

Contraindications

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions such as redness, a burning sensation, itching, and allergic reactions. Inhalation may cause irritation to the eyes. Camphor can cause severe side effects in children if overdosed. These include nausea, vomiting, colic, difficulty breathing, convulsions and coma.
