Collagen I Telopeptide

Collagen-I telopeptide is a marker of bone resorption and thus of osteoclast (bone resorption cell) activity. Collagen-I telopeptide is not bone-specific, as it is also found in other organs such as skin and cartilage. It is subject to wide diagnostic variations.

Collagen I telopeptide is never the 1st choice laboratory parameter for the above reasons. Deoxypyridinoline (DPD), a bone-specific marker, should also always be measured.

The procedure

Material needed

  • Urine

Preparation of the patient

  • Not necessary

Disruptive factors

  • None known

Standard values

Each laboratory has its own standard ranges for this purpose!

Indications

  • Suspected bone metabolism disorders with increased bone resorption.
  • Therapy control in bone metabolism disorders with increased bone resorption.

Interpretation

Interpretation of increased values

  • Immobilization
  • Bone metastases
  • Plasmocytoma (multiple myeloma) – disease caused by malignant (malignant) proliferation of special blood cells (plasma cells).
  • Postmenopausal bone loss – after menopause.
  • Osteoporosis with increased bone turnover
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

Interpretation of decreased values

  • Not relevant
