Combination with other medicinal plants

For gargling and rinsing, sage can be mixed in equal parts with chamomile flowers. Take 2 heaped teaspoons of this mixture, pour 1⁄4 l boiling water over it, let it stand for 15 minutes and strain it.

Side effects

The essential oil of sage contains thujone, a nerve poison which, in high concentrations, has the property of causing strong palpitations, cramps, dizziness and nausea. Overdoses should be avoided (more than 15 g sage leaves per day). However, no side effects are to be expected with the normal use of sage.

Almost no thujone is released during the preparation of gargle solutions or teas. Finished medicinal products made from alcoholic sage extracts must comply with a certain upper limit due to the thujone content. Therefore, particular care is required when using the essential oil.

Even when used as a spice it does not cause any harm. During pregnancy sage leaves should not be used internally. Taking sage while breast-feeding can reduce milk production. Externally applied sage solutions are generally harmless.
