Complication | Symptoms of hypothyroidism

Complication

As a complication a myxoedema coma can occur, but this is very rare today! This has a high mortality rate and requires intensive medical monitoring. Respiration must be supported and vital functions secured.

Glucocorticoids and glucose are administered as infusions, the water and electrolyte balance must be monitored. Thyroxine is immediately injected into the veins. The body temperature is slowly normalized, mostly hypothermia is present.

Since hypothyroidism can be caused by iodine deficiency, the iodine intake from food should be sufficient. Recommended iodine intake for adults is 200μg/day. Pregnant women need approximately 300μg/day. Particularly iodine-containing foods are sea fish, salmon and iodized table salt.
