Complications after ovarian removal

In most cases, the removal of the ovaries is performed under general anesthesia. For this reason, general postoperative complications may occur shortly after the surgical procedure. Due to the substances used during general anesthesia, problems of the cardiovascular system may occur immediately after the ovarian removal.

Although the drugs used in general anesthesia are now relatively well tolerated, some patients may experience nausea and/or vomiting. In addition, the activity of the gastrointestinal tract and the urinary bladder is restricted by the common anaesthetic drugs. In the course of this, constipation (technical term: constipation) and/or urinary retention may occur postoperatively.

Among the most frequent postoperative complications after ovarian removal are the occurrence of postoperative bleeding and the development of inflammatory processes in the area of the surgical site. Especially the risk of postoperative bleeding is a serious problem in the case of ovarian removal. The reason for this is the fact that large amounts of blood can seep into the body cavity before the post-operative bleeding becomes clinically evident.

Controlling the specific blood levels can reduce the risk under certain circumstances. Furthermore, the newly operated woman may develop wound healing disorders. In addition to these general postoperative complications, special complications after ovarian removal also play a decisive role.

During the operation, the bladder, ureters or intestines may be injured. Immediately after the surgical procedure, these injuries are often manifested by extensive loss of function of the affected organ. In addition, the operation may result in the formation of scar tissue, which can lead to complaints over a longer period of time.

Depending on the extent of the tissue injuries, the affected patients may still suffer from severe abdominal pain weeks after the surgical procedure. In addition, in some cases the surgical procedure causes a strong influence on the hormonal cycle. For this reason, many of the affected women develop spotting that lasts for weeks.
